Hello, I am Nghi!
I am taking Asian Pacific American Cultural Studies-ASAM 320-51 (11460) online in Summer 2019.
My Project title is The Bamboo Ceiling.
When I was a freshman, I heard the word "bamboo ceiling" from one of my professors and was interested in the term. Although I have not read the book "Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling" of Jane Hyun, the word "bamboo ceiling" looks like modern structural embeddedness toward APAs.
Like the term "glass ceiling" which are barriers that limited women and minorities to elevate to higher rank positions in the workplace, the bamboo ceiling is used specifically for Asian Pacific Americans.
Through the project researches, I would like to know:
- How mass media creates inadequate representations of Asian Pacific Islander Americans?
- How APAs have been impacted in the workplace by the media discourses.
- How difficult for Asian Pacific Islander Americans to "break the bamboo ceiling" in order to be truly recognized and to achieve sufficient positions in society and careers?
Here are weekly posts for my projects:
- Episode 1: My American_A Trip to Find the Past and the Future: Introducing how mass media impacts on creating stereotypical representations of APAs.
- Episode 2: Overcome Stereotypes and Recover True Identities: Sharing the main stereotypes of APAs and the efforts of APAs to recover their identities.
- Episode 3: The New Media is an Advantage for APAs: It is the time that APAs can proactively display their real identities to the society by taking the advantages of the Digital Age.
- Episode 4: The Utilization of Both Old and New Media of Asian Pacific Americans This episode introduce how APAs are maximizing the benefits of all media
- Episode 5: APAs, Mass Media, And Community Based Organizations It summarizes what I learn to answer my questions
